Google Hangouts Google's New, Beautiful Messaging Application

Thursday, May 16, 2013 - 0 Comments

Google I/O upgraded Google+ Hangouts a popular group video application to help bring all  real-life conversations online, across any device or platform, and with groups of up to 10 friends.  Google unveiled the newly designed Google+, which helps you easily explore content as well dramatically improve your online photo experience to give you crisp, beautiful photos without the work.

Google Hangouts: conversations that last, with the people you love

Google launching its stand-alone version of Hangouts that combines text, photos and live video across Android, iOS and your computer. The app is fast, free, and includes a number of key benefits, like:
  • Messaging is richer, and more responsive. Photos and emoji make conversations more fun, while real-time activity indicators really bring them to life.
  • Your conversations can last. With conversation history, you can swipe back in time and relive all your favorite moments. (You can also turn off history, if you want.)
  • No more annoying notifications. Once you see a notification on one device, we'll clear it from your other Android devices and computers. You can also snooze notifications when you don't want to be interrupted.
  • You can always say hello, face-to-face-to-face. Whether you’re 1-on-1 or with a group of friends, you can always make a free video call to everyone you're with.
  • The app is available in lots of places. You can download Hangouts from Google Play, the App Store, and the Chrome Web Store. It’s also part of Gmail and Google+.

Android Messaging Is Still A Mess

2013-05-15-15.142013-05-125-15.14

At the end of the day, Hangouts replaces one app: Google Talk. Maybe, hopefully, Google+ Messenger will be removed in the next G+, update, but for right now it is still on our phones. Hangouts doesn't integrate SMS or Google Voice in any way, so, at best, Android is down from 4 IM clients to 3.

As much as I would like to gush over a new Google product, Hangouts is a disappointment, there's really no other way to put it. It's a much, much nicer Google Talk, but that's all it is, another instant messaging client. The lack of SMS and Google Voice integration means Google hasn't solved the primary problem with their messaging apps. The lack of online presence is really annoying, and actually make the friends list less functional than Google Talk's. The biggest change over Google Talk is that your iOS frenemies can now get in on the action too, but back in Android land, we are still all waiting for our unified messenger.

Re-Size Photos using Image Resizer PowerToy

Re-Size Photos using Image Resizer PowerToy

Today's digital cameras take great, detailed photos but the images are often too large to easily send.  If you want to email these pictures and publish them on your blogs, having smaller file sizes is preferred.

The Image Resizer PowerToy for XP has been around for several years and does a great job of resizing an image by right clicking it.

After right-clicking and choosing "Resize Pictures" you get an easy to use menu for making an image larger, smaller, or a custom size.

As an example this image came directly off a digital camera and as you can see it is half a Megabyte - having several photos this size can start to add up in a hurry. By making the image smaller we save a lot of space.

Google close to launching free music downloads in China

Wednesday, February 6, 2008 - 0 Comments

The U.S. search giant Google Inc. is planning for a joint venture with a Chinese online music company that would permit it to provide free licensed music downloads in China. This is significant in Google's push to counter leading Chinese search engine, Baidu.com, which already provides links to download sites.

According to PaidContent, "Google is in the late planning stages of a JV with Chinese online music company Top100.cn, a Beijing-based site that currently sells licensed music downloads.

According to Wall Street Journal The service, which is likely to offer access to tunes from three global music companies as well as dozens of smaller players, could start in the next several weeks barring any last-minute hiccups. The music pact marks a turning point in Google's battle with Baidu to gain dominance in an Internet market that is soon expected to surpass the U.S. this year in number of users.

This move may help Google position itself vis-a-vis locally-favored Baidu.

In Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta when you paste a YouTube video URL in chat window, your friends can watch the video clip inline without having to visit the YouTube Website.

Another useful feature - if you are going Offline, you can configure Yahoo! Messenger 9 to forward all the Offline IM message to a your mobile number as SMS text messages.
