Onam, ഓണം, is the largest festival in the Indian state of Kerala. It falls during the first month of the Malayalam calendar which is Chingam (August–September) and marks the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali.The festival lasts for ten days and is linked to many elements of Kerala's culture and tradition. Do you love using Google Chrome but wish that it had some extra features built in? Now you can still enjoy all of that Chrome goodness and more with ChromePlus.

Curious about what those extra features are? They are: Double click tab to close page, Mouse Gestures, Super drag (new tab creation for links and text search), IE tab, & Download tools supported in context menu.

Installation

ChromePlus is easy to set up and like Iron Browser it installs to the Program Files area. Here you can see the install path if you are installing ChromePlus on Windows XP. If you are installing ChromePlus on Windows Vista, then your install path will look like this:

But you can easily change the install directory in Vista to this:

“C:Program FilesChromePlus”

Note: Make certain to select the “Start Menu” shortcut creation while installing…the only one selected by default is for the “Desktop”.

Once you have completed the quick and easy setup, you will see the following window. ChromePlus will give you the opportunity to customize what information is imported and to make it the default browser.

As you can see, ChromePlus looks identical to Chrome except for the ChromePlus Icons. The “Home Button” is displayed by default, so do not be surprised to see it there.

Notice the ChromePlus Icon at the end of the “Address Bar”…

Curious about which version you have installed? In the “About Window” you will be able to see the Chromium build used and version of ChromePlus that you have installed. Definitely good information to have.

Like Chrome, there are the two menus accessible in the upper right part of the browser. The “Page Menu” is identical to Chrome…

But the “Tools Menu” has some differences! There are two extra commands here…“New IE Tab & Check update”. Notice that the “Sync my bookmarks…” command is available in ChromePlus.

You can see that there is a new tab area available in the “Options Window” as soon as you open it. The “Basics Tab” area has the same options as Chrome…

You may or may not want to deselect the first three options shown under “Privacy” in the “Under the Hood Tab” area depending on your personal preferences.

In the “ChromePlus Options Tab” area you can choose to use double clicking to close tabs instead of using the “x”, what you would like to do with the “Super drag & Mouse Gesture” features, if you want auto updating enabled, and create a customized URL list for the IE Tab feature.

If you are curious about “Configuring mouse gesture actions”, this is what your window will look like. The drop down menus make it very easy to set up your own personalized set of mouse gestures (very nice!).

The Chinese government may be keeping a close eye on which websites, blogs and search engines their people can visit, but that’s not stopping internet usage from growing fast throughout the country. The government-related information center CNNIC (China Internet Network Information Center) claims the nation’s online population has grown 41.9% in 2008 to an astounding 298 million users, reports the BBC That’s about the size of the entire U.S. population, whileeMarketer pegs the online population in the States to be about 200 million.

According to the study, usage in the countryside is growing much faster than in urban areas (60.8% year-on-year compared to 35.6% in cities), the numbers of bloggers has increased to +162 million, and accessing the internet through mobile phones is still immensely popular. CNNIC reports that 117.6 million people accessed the internet using their mobile phones last year, up 133% from 2007.

The Apple iPhone 3G offers critical new features including support for high-speed 3G networks, third-party applications, and expanded e-mail. Its call quality is improved and it continues to deliver an excellent music and video experience. The iPhone 3G delivers on its promises by adding critical features and sharper call quality. The iTunes App Store is pretty amazing, and the 3G support is more than welcome. Critical features still are missing, and the battery depletes quickly under heavy use, but the iPhone 3G is a big improvement over the original model.

But the iPhone 3G continues to lack some basic features that are available on even the simplest cell phone. Battery life was uneven, and the 3G connection tended to be shaky. Also, the e-mail syncing is not without its faults.

The iPhone 3G's support for AT&T's wireless UMTS/HSDPA wireless broadband network comes too late for original iPhone buyers who grew frustrated with the slow Web-surfing speeds over the 2.5G EDGE network, but it makes for a much more satisfying second-generation device. Safari consistently delivered speeds of about 300Kbps to 500Kbps and even faster at times in our tests. That's a huge jump over the typical EDGE speeds of less than 100Kbps. Web pages that used to take minutes took only seconds to load via 3G.

Unfortunately I still don't see the Themes tab in my Gmail settings, but Google is an expert of the slow rollout, so we can all expect them sometime in the next few days. I'm partial to the ascii/Terminal theme, though it's probably a touch on the impractical side. Other than that, a lot of the offerings actually look really nice—especially compared with some of the lame duck skins Google offers in iGoogle. VoxOx new IM with VOIP features - Skype, Digsby merged into one

What if Digsby and Skype merged into one seemingly all-powerful VoIP and messaging communications tool? It's a question which, according to San Diego-based telephone company TelCentris, can be answered by VoxOx.

VoxOx, currently for Windows and Intel-based Macs with plans for Linux and PowerPC Mac versions to be released within six months, incorporates features that have not yet been seen all rolled into one package. It's got multi-protocol chat abilities, bolstered by messaging support on the most popular social-networking sites and support for short Web mail reading and writing. It offers a telephony service that includes call encryption; mobile-to-mobile calls initiated by either SMS or via a Web site; a free personal-assistant-style call-forwarding service; and a system for earning minutes by watching ads or responding to surveys.

Entering public beta Monday, VoxOx is able to do all this because the software is being developed by a telephone company, says TelCentris' CFO Michael Faught. "Part of allowing users to take control of their interconnected lifestyle is to allow them to click a button and fire out an e-mail."

One of VoxOx's aims, he said, is to make it as simple as sending an e-mail to initiate any kind of communication. When people are forced to use so many different programs to complete similar tasks, "it has become unmanageable."

Part of that simplification process includes making VoxOx's API open source, said TelCentris' CEO Bryan Hertz. They hope to create a similar open-source community that can build out features for VoxOx that they might not have the time for or even consider. This is a playbook page that Skype also uses to great effect: Skype has several hundred "extras" that most likely have not hurt user interest.

TelCentris' interest in expanding what it can do also comes from its current customer base. Hertz notes that the company provides services to more than a dozen phone companies, and provides hosted phone services to dozens of small to medium businesses globally, with customers ranging from the Philippines to Brazil.

In addition to the features listed above, VoxOx offers 120 free minutes of call time to all registrants at the U.S. rate; a free U.S.-based phone number; international calling; pay-by-minute upgrade plans; voicemail; customizable hold music; video conferencing with VoxOx contacts; two-way text messaging; and tabbed instant messaging for MSN, ICQ, AOL, Jabber, Yahoo, and Google.

To ramp up interest, VoxOx offers all users an additional 120 free calling minutes to every person they recommend who signs up. Users can also watch short advertisements or fill out surveys to earn additional minutes. They've got a sweet deal going for CNET readers, too:

Users can currently share files up to 100MB via a generated download link that they can then share via e-mail or instant message. Mobile access is available from a mobile browser, iPhone, and WAP, with a planned native iPhone app.

Other planned features for the near future include an ATA upgrade for physical home phones, a personal assistant, fax support, the ability to route inbound text to VoxOx or your cell phone, video conferencing with non-VoxOx contacts, untabbed IM, group chat IM, Away message defaults to Social Status, Facebook IM support, and additional IM protocols. VoxOx hopes to incorporate support for LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter, and YouTube on the social-networking side, and Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook, and Mac contact importing.

When you install VoxOx, it's hard not to note that the main Home interface looks like an iPhone. That was intentional, Hertz says. "The interface is skinnable, but the default looks like that for continuity with smartphones," Hertz said.

From there, square icons with rounded corners and highlighted by bright colors take you to 15 program features: contacts, a keypad for on-the-fly dialing, your calling and chat history, account settings, a setup Wizard, Call-Back, Reach-Me, Vmail/Fax, Hold Music, Vox Points, Updates, Invites, Web Portal, Mobile, and the Help button, which jumps to the Web forums, the FAQ, user guides, and videos. Paying users get voice and e-mail support, too.

The Call-Back feature is what sets VoxOx apart from other VoIP services. Call-Back has two tabs in it, one for Web-initiated callback and one for starting the callback with an SMS. Under the Web callback, you set the country, country code, and area code and phone number for the number that you want to be reached at, and then enter in the settings for the person you're trying to call.

Hit Initiate Callback at the bottom of the pane. VoxOx will call you from a local number. Pick up and you'll hear ringing through the earpiece as if you've dialed a number. That's VoxOx calling the person at the second number you entered from a number that's local to them. When they pick up, you'll be able to talk as if you've made a long-distance call but without the long-distance charges. The process is simpler than it sounds, and in three tests the call quality for both me and the person I was speaking to was fine. There were no instances of tinniness or echoing.

Initiating the SMS Callback is, in some respects, even easier. Once you set your cell phone number in the interface, you send a text message from your phone to the number 1-323-649-9139. In the body of the message, you must type in 011 followed by the country code, the area code, and the phone number without any hyphens.

Shortly after, you should receive a phone call from the permanent VoxOx number that you've been assigned at the top of the main VoxOx interface. Answer it, wait a few seconds, and you'll hear ringing. If you're lucky, the person you're trying to reach won't be freaked out by the unfamiliar local number that's calling them and they'll pick up. I tested this with friends in Sweden and Australia, and again encountered no tinniness, no echo, and no delays.

Unfortunately, I did encounter one angry wife who did not think highly of me waking her up in the middle of the night. My attempts to blame misremembering the time change from Boston to Melbourne on VoxOx were strangely met with extreme derision.

A Home button at the top of the pane makes it easy to jump back to the main interface. The next feature, Reach-Me, lets users configure multiple call-forwarding numbers, as well as set the number of seconds one of them can ring before jumping to the next number. You can also set the number of seconds the dialed number will ring before Reach-Me kicks in, and whether your multiple call-forwarding numbers will be attempted simultaneously or in order.

Given how much it can do, I expected VoxOx to be a massive piece of bloatware. Surprisingly, the installation process took around one minute, and at launch it was using around 90MB of RAM. This jumped up to around 380MB while running eight simultaneous chats and a telephony session--a bit high, but not outrageously so. The computer I tested it on had 2GB of RAM, and was running a fully loaded Firefox, an RSS client, and a jukebox, so I wasn't expecting great performance. However, VoxOx smoothly jumped from pane to pane and there was no sluggishness in its response time.

As you can tell from the list of planned features above, VoxOx is still very much in beta. Many of the features that will make it stand above its competitors haven't been fully rolled out yet, so it's a little hard to judge on its merits as it is. Because it encourages such heavy cross-pollination between cell phones and computers, it'd be great if there was a way to import cell phone contacts. You also cannot, as of yet, begin an SMS Call-Back and have it forwarded via Reach-Me to a different phone.

Even with those drawbacks, VoxOx looks to force changes in the telephony and instant-messaging market that favor users more than they do now--as long as we can all remember what time zone we're calling.

Sony has always been a go-to brand for people who don't mind paying more for HDTVs, or just about anything else for that matter, and the company's least-expensive 2008 32-inch HDTV, the KDL-32M4000, exemplifies the trend.

This little set costs a couple of hundred dollars more than no-name LCDs, and generally a hundred more than competing name-brand sets such as the Samsung LN32A450 and the Sharp LC-32D44U.

Google close to launching free music downloads in China

The U.S. search giant Google Inc. is planning for a joint venture with a Chinese online music company that would permit it to provide free licensed music downloads in China. This is significant in Google's push to counter leading Chinese search engine, Baidu.com, which already provides links to download sites.

According to PaidContent, "Google is in the late planning stages of a JV with Chinese online music company Top100.cn, a Beijing-based site that currently sells licensed music downloads.

According to Wall Street Journal The service, which is likely to offer access to tunes from three global music companies as well as dozens of smaller players, could start in the next several weeks barring any last-minute hiccups. The music pact marks a turning point in Google's battle with Baidu to gain dominance in an Internet market that is soon expected to surpass the U.S. this year in number of users.

This move may help Google position itself vis-a-vis locally-favored Baidu.

BrahMos, the world’s fastest cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia, will be produced in Kerala. Defence Minister A K Antony will rename the state-owned Kerala High-Tech Industries Limited (KELTEC) as BrahMos Aerospace (Thiruvananthpuram) Limited today evening. Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan will attend the ceremony.

BrahMos Aerospace is a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroeyenia. The Thiruvananthapuram unit will the missile’s second manufacturing hub after Hyderabad. The supersonic cruise missile can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land.

BrahMos at speeds of Mach 2.5 to 2.8 is about three times faster than the US subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile. It claims to have the capability to attack surface targets as low as 10m in altitude and has a maximum range of 290km. According to Sivathanu Pillai, BrahMos CEO the DRDO decided to increase production as it could not meet the growing demand after the army, navy and air force placed more orders.

The projected annual turnover of BrahMos in Kerala is Rs.5 Billion within three years and Rs. 10 Billion in five years. “Kerala can feel proud that it is rolling out the world’s fastest cruise missile and providing for the country’s security. This would bring in a big change in the state’s investment profile as well,” Pillai said after signing the agreement.

Now you can post stories from gmail. Gmail hear stories from you about how you're using it from keeping your long-distance relationship alive over chat to saving a historic record of your high school life within a single conversation thread.

Google is looking for you to share your stories on how you use Gmail in a 30 second or less video. The criteria for posting stories is as follows.
1. 30 seconds maximum
2. Make sure your audio is set up correctly (so that you're heard)
3. Get creative
4. Tell a story about how Gmail has impacted you.
5. Play nice - don't trash other email providers that you used before Gmail.
6. Make sure your video doesn't violate any copyright laws and complies with Gmail and YouTube's terms.

But pinning your stories on the walls around Google hasn't been the best way to share them with the Gmail community, so share yours with the world. All you need is a video camera and a great story. Feel free to get creative with special effects or choreography or just tell it like it is.

Google realized that it has ignored the social space for too long and that its services could be more useful if they had a social touch. After launching a site for sharing web pages with your friends and adding profiles to Google Maps, Google should integrate the sharing platform with other Google sites and unify the profiles across all Google services.

To test the waters for a social news site, Google launched a Facebook app for Google News. The application lets you customize the sections and expands them with more stories without reloading the page, but it only displays a single story for each cluster. You can share a story with some of your friends or post it to your profile, keep track of your shared stories and see a list of items shared by your friends.

"Whether it is from our homepage, one of our RSS feeds, or on a mobile device, Google News seeks to connect people with the news that matters to them -- wherever they may be. As part of that goal we are pleased to announce the Google News Application for Facebook. This experimental application enables users to create custom sections or select from a set of pre-defined topics, then browse and share stories with their friends on Facebook," announces the Google News Blog.

The unofficial Google Reader Facebook app is already popular, so an official Google app would be even more successful. Flickr provides a unique email upload address feature. You can use your own unique address to email your photos directly into your Flickr account from your camera phone or your email program. You can send your photographs to this email address as attachments and they’ll show up in Flick Photo gallery almost instantly. The subject line of email becomes the photo’s title while the body of the email becomes the photo’s description.

You can set up a special email address to automatically post photos to your blog. You'll also need to set up posting to your blog from Flickr if you haven't already.

Encryption

Encryption is a means of communicating confidential information with someone so that the data being transferred is hidden (unreadable) to anyone whom it is not intended. Symmetric-key encryption is where the sender and the receiver of the message share the same key. This key is used to both encrypt and decrypt the message. If Joe and Carl want to communicate with each other, they both must know what the secret key it. They also need a secure means of exchanging the key with each other. Now if Carl also wants to communicate securely with George, they must have a different secret key that exists between Joe and Carl. (Carl and George wouldn't want Joe to be able to read their message.) One of the biggest downfalls of Symmetric-keys is key management. In an environment with many users, this can get quite cumbersome.

Public Key Cryptography

Public key cryptography solves both the management of keys and the ability to securely distribute keys to many people. In the public key scheme, each person will generate a public and a private key.

Each person can publish their public key while their secret key must remain confidential to them. Messages that are encrypted with a public key can ONLY be decrypted with its private key. Keys may not be deduced from each other. Unlike symmetric-keys, users do not share confidential information, since all communications involves only their public keys. A users private key is neither published nor shared.

Lets say that Joe wants to send Carl an encrypted message. Joe needs to first obtain Carl's public key. This is fairly easy since Carl's public key is public knowledge. Carl may elect to simply mail Joe a version of his public key. Joe then uses Carl's public key to encrypt a message. Once Carl gets the message, he uses his private key to decrypt the message. Since no one else has Carl's private key, no one else but Carl can read the message from Joe. (Not even the sender Joe). Keep in mind that if Carl wants to send encrypted information to Joe, Carl needs to obtain a copy of Joe's public key and perform the same steps that Joe did to encrypt the message.

Digital Signature

Digital signatures are nothing more than using the above example and putting it into reverse. A digital signature is a non-forgeable way of digitally signing a message. This is a way of authenticating that the sender of a message is really and truly the person that they say they are. The sender cannot later claim that someone tried to impersonate them.

Lets say that Joe wants to send Carl a message. Carl wants to know for sure that the message really came from Joe. Before Joe sends the message, Carl asks him to digitally sign the message. Joe then uses his private key to sign the message. When Carl gets the message, he must have a copy of Joe's public key to verify the message. When Carl performs the verify, if the hash comes out exactly the same (using Joe's public key), then only Joe could have sent that message.

Digital Certificates

To ensure the confidence in the identity of a public key, public keys are incorporated into digital certificates. A digital certificate is a binding of a public key to a user by a trusted third party known as a Certificate Authority. The public key and the users identity, together with other information such as the certificate expiration date, are digitally signed by the Certificate Authority. Certificate Authorities are nothing more than electronic notaries, attesting to the identity of users and the validity of their public keys.

Certificates may be issued in several different ways. For example, Joe may generate his own public/private key pair and send the public key to an appropriate Certificate Authority with some proof of his identification. The Certificate Authority then validates the identity of Joe to ensure that Joe is really Joe. Next, the Certificate Authority sends Joe back a certificate attesting to the binding between Joe and his public key, along with a hierarchy of certificates verifying the Certificate Authorities public key. Joe can then publish this certificate chain whenever necessary to demonstrate the legitimacy of his public key.

Another way for Joe to obtain a certificate is to have an administrator generate the public/private key pair for him in a way that the person generating the keys does not know the private key for Joe. The private key is then given to Joe either on a disk or within a token. The public key belonging to Joe is then bond to a certificate by the Certificate Authority with a copy given to Joe and a copy posted to a public database of keys for download purpose.

Microsoft Releases Office 2003 SP3

Microsoft has released a service pack for Microsoft Office 2003. Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) contains security enhancements and stability improvements. Some fixes that are included with Office 2003 SP3 were previously released in separate updates. Office 2003 SP3 combines the previously released fixes into one update.

No new feature is introduced in Office 2003 SP3 expect that it now lets you install add-ins in Microsoft Office Access 2003 ond a Windows Vista-based computer.

Once your Office 2003 files are successfully patch with SP3, the version numbers of major executables like Excel.exe, WinWord.exe, PowerPoint.exe should say 11.0.8169.0 while that of Msaccess.exe will be 11.0.8166.0.

Some notable changes in the SP3 include:

1. Office 2003 programs can no longer open or save certain file formats like PPT created in PowerPoint 97 or before.

2. The Fast Save setting in Microsoft Office Word has been removed.

Microsoft release a new social website for Microsoft Office users where they can upload Word Documents, PowerPoint Presentations or Excel Spreadsheets.

Art of Office is a place for people to submit artistic and/or useful content made using Office applications (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint). Whether it’s creating pixel art using Excel (a la our Post-it Notes) developing an animated short story in PowerPoint or artistic pieces in Word, this online community allows you to share, rate, remix and discuss user-submitted content with other Mac Office users around the world.

While the Art of Office site is a creation of the Mac team at Microsoft Office, it accepts content created with either Windows or Mac Office programs. Any one can download Office documents from Art of Office and use them in their own presentations / spreadsheets. One of the frustrating things about being an international affiliate that wants to sell into the United States using Google Adwords, is the inability to easily find out which ads are showing to US surfers.
